Love my Polar Vantage V3
My smart watch and GPS watch experiences include the Apple Watch SE gen 2, then went to Coros Apex Pro 2, and a Garmin Forerunner 965 before making my purchase of the Polar Vantage V3 (all within 2024). I bought this because I wanted a better battery life option than an Apple Watch, highly accurate heart rate monitoring, on-screen mapping, and all of these features to still be a lightweight watch. Pros: I love the clean design of the Polar Vantage V3. I find the design more attractive than the Garmin Forerunners and any of the Coros models. I like that all 5 buttons have a textured, gritty surface. Good USB-C charger. Strong magnetic connector keeps the watch from falling off. No port that can get dirty like those found on Coros and Garmin. The heart rate sensor works great. I’ve tested this up against an FDA-certified pulse oximeter, and they were both the same measurement. The Forerunner 965 would wildly fluctuate in my resting heart rate when sitting down. Compared to my pulse oximeter, my resting heart rate would be 60, whereas the Forerunner would be showing 135. But when I would compare the Vantage V3 and my pulse oximeter, they would be an exact match. The weather widget is one of my favorite things to have on the watch face, and it works flawlessly, unlike what my experience was with the Garmin Forerunner 965. I haven’t encountered any issues with the sleep tracking, but I am still learning what all the stats mean. Music controls work perfectly as long as I’m in range of my iPhone. I couldn’t get the music controls to work a single time on the Forerunner 965. The battery life has been impressive, even with wearing the watch day and night and keeping the continuous heart rate monitoring turned on and doing outdoor workouts with dual-frequency GPS. While the Polar Flow app does look dated, it works fine and has all the metrics I need for tracking my outdoor activities. Cons: I would appreciate it if the Polar watch had a tap-to-wake feature similar to that of the Apple Watch or Garmin Forerunners. I would also like to see more customization options available for watch faces. In particular, I miss the red shift feature found on Garmin Forerunners, which is particularly useful for nighttime use. Furthermore, I would welcome the ability to distinguish between specific and all notifications. For instance, I would like to be able to receive only calls and texts notifications, similar to the functionality available on the Garmin Forerunners and Coros Apex 2 Pro. While I understand that Apple may have restrictions on third-party watch settings, it is possible for a watch brand to implement this feature. No sapphire glass crystal as found on cheaper brands Suunto or Coros. And it would be nice to have street and trail names in the on-screen mapping.
